Motivation and goal of the network
Infectious diseases are in the public eye again and again, despite major medical advances. In many parts of the world, they are among the leading causes of death and pose enormous challenges for health systems. With consistent vaccination programs, once threatening epidemics from viruses or bacteria could be stopped and thanks to the use of antibiotics, the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases has also improved considerably. Nevertheless, especially in the age of globalization (e.g. introduction of dangerous pathogens by travelers), the risk of the spread of infectious diseases should not be underestimated.
The aim of this network is the development of innovative technologies for medical intervention in global pandemics caused by newly emerging pathogens (e.g. viruses, bacteria, fungi). Possible areas of focus include: containment, prevention, diagnostics and intervention.
